Summary
R. A. Umurzakov and S. A. Rabbimkulov of Tashkent State Technical University examined how the size and location of oil and gas fields relate to gravity anomalies, using the Fergana oil and gas region as an example. They used published material on the geological structure, data on the size (effective volume) of the deposits and deep gravity anomalies in the Faye reduction. About 70 deposits were included.
Analysis of variance showed that the effect of deep anomalies on the effective volume of the fields in the Fergana depression is significant and reliable, with a probability of 0.99. The share of this factor in the total effect of all factors is 42% for oil deposits and 62% for oil and gas deposits. In the authors’ view, this shows that deep subcrustal processes, which create the gravity effects, strongly shape the size and location of the fields. The effect of local gravity anomalies is also significant, but its reliability is low.
