Summary

Written to assess formation water as a source of useful elements, this paper describes microcomponents and rare elements in the Jurassic aquifer system of the Bukhara–Khiva region. In Uzbekistan, industrial groundwaters are known on the Ustyurt plateau and in the Bukhara–Karshi, Surkhandarya and Fergana artesian basins. In the Surkhandarya basin, Cretaceous water with industrial concentrations of lithium, strontium, iodine and bromine has been found at Lyalmikar, Gadzhak, Khaudak, Kokayty, Aktau and Uchkyzyl. In the Bukhara–Khiva region, the authors name the Upper Jurassic carbonate formation (horizon XV) as promising.

Water chemistry changes westwards and north-westwards, from the south-western spurs of the Gissar range towards the Pitnyak uplift. Water of under 50 g/L forms a narrow strip in the north-east of the region, next to the Pre-Kyzylkum monocline. Weak brines of 50–100 g/L cover almost all of the Bukhara step, and chloride–calcium brines of 100–150 g/L occur mainly on the Chardzhou step. Strong and very strong chloride–calcium brines of 200–250 g/L and over 250 g/L lie on the Kulbeshkak, Kandym, Ispanly-Chandyr and Dengizkul uplifts and in the Karakul and Beshkent troughs. The region’s salinity zones are also mapped in a 2024 study.

Lithium, rubidium, strontium and gold rise with the salinity and metamorphism of the water, while caesium and strontium are higher in water at the margins of hydrocarbon deposits. Lithium is 12.0–40.2 mg/L in brines of 50–150 g/L on the Bukhara step and reaches 50.0–75.9 mg/L at Garbi, North Syuzma, Uzunshor, North Nishan and North Guzar on the Chardzhou step, where salinity is 150–250 g/L. The authors conclude that the most promising water in the region is that of the Upper Jurassic aquifer, dominated by strong and very strong chloride–calcium brines.
