Strategy of transition to energy-efficient production at the Navoi MMC
Стратегия перехода к энергоэффективному производству в Навоийском ГМК
- Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat, Navoi, Uzbekistan
Highlights
- Nurabad hot water: three wells 300 m deep, 4.5 km from the town; water at 36 °C.
- Saving claimed: more than 1,000 t of standard fuel a year at the Nurabad boiler house.
- Heat pumps: 20–35% less fuel per unit of heat than boiler houses, or 3–4 times less electricity than direct electric heating.
- Solar water heaters: 5 installations, 676 m² of collectors, over 500 Gcal a year, more than 400,000 kWh of electricity saved a year.
- The combine’s fuel and energy use: close to 800,000 t of oil equivalent a year.

Summary
The authors set out how the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat planned to cut its use of fuel and energy, which was approaching 800,000 tonnes of oil equivalent a year and growing with output. Among the non-traditional sources they list water, solar, wind and geothermal energy: treated waste water reused in Zarafshan and Uchkuduk instead of water pumped from the Amu Darya about 300 km away, and five solar water heaters with 676 m² of collectors that save more than 400,000 kWh of electricity a year.
Thermal water supplies hot water to the people of Nurabad. It is taken from three wells 300 m deep, 4.5 km from the town, at 36 °C. In summer it goes straight to homes and public buildings, in winter to the town’s boiler house. The authors put the saving at more than 1,000 tonnes of standard fuel a year at the boiler house.
Heat pumps, the authors write, cut fuel use per unit of heat by 20–35% compared with boiler houses, or use 3–4 times less electricity than direct electric heating, yet the combine lags well behind leading companies in using them for low-grade heat. They name fuel prices below world market levels and the lack of low-temperature heating systems as the main obstacles, and see the recovery of waste heat with heat pumps as a reserve of fuel saving.
