Summary
The article reviews environmental and radioecological work at the mining and metallurgical operations of the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat (NMMC), which contribute to man-made pollution in the region. The work covered monitoring of soil and air; monitoring of drinking water, waste water and groundwater; estimates of the annual total effective dose in geotechnological mines, production facilities and nearby settlements; the state and use of water resources; the effect of gold extraction plants on the environment; land reclamation; and the share of uranium production and tailings dumps in man-made pollution.
The results of years of observation are summarised, together with ways to improve the environment in the area of NMMC's operations. The authors also assess whether the final product, uranium, meets international limits on specific activity. The English abstract gives no measured values.
