On 5 May 2025, Elbek Ochilov and Vice-Rector Professor Nazarov of Navoi State University of Mining and Technology met Ingimar G. Haraldsson, Deputy Director of the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme, in Reykjavík. The meeting was a first step towards promoting geothermal power in Navoi region.
It was the first meeting between an Uzbek institution and the programme. Mr. Haraldsson had attended the Samarkand Climate Forum on 4 and 5 April 2025.
Why it matters
The meeting opened contact between Uzbekistan and Iceland’s geothermal training programme. In 2026 Mr. Ochilov joined its six-month training as the programme’s first fellow from Uzbekistan.
