Summary

A. Zakirov, R. Zakirov, I. Khalismatov and F. Zakirova of Tashkent State Technical University and V. Borshov of Roke International LLC trace the tectonic development of the south-eastern Turan plate and the Beshkent–Kashkadarya foothill depression of the modern Tien Shan, which is known fairly completely from the pre-Jurassic deposits onwards. In the Amu Darya syneclise, the pre-Jurassic deposits are confined mainly to the Khiva and Zaunguz grabens, which are divided by the Central Amu Darya ridge. At the end of the Oligocene, tectonic activity rose sharply within the Turan plate, and here and further east the post-platform Tien Shan orogen appeared on the plate. Over most of the Chardzhou and Bukhara steps, the plate continued its own development.

The foothill depression is superimposed on the part of the Turan plate that was drawn into the subsidence. It is divided into separate blocks, each with its own structure, thickness of Cenozoic molasse and even section of the Jurassic terrigenous formation. The authors treat the depression as a megablock that merges smoothly with the Turan plate to the south-west and north-west and joins the rising part of the orogen to the north-east.
