Highlights

  • Source water temperatures tested: 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C (measured 2–20 °C in the evaporator).
  • Maximum condenser water temperature after 60 minutes: 35, 41.5, 48.8 and 53.5 °C.
  • Coefficient of performance: 2.1–3.5; 3.5 with a 20 °C source.

Summary

The authors, of the Karshi Engineering-Economics Institute, tested an experimental vapour-compression heat pump with R134a refrigerant, copper-coil evaporator and condenser in 45 L water tanks, a single-stage compressor and an expansion valve, measuring refrigerant temperatures and pressures, water temperatures and the compressor's electricity use.

With source water in the evaporator at starting temperatures of 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C, the heat pump raised the water in the condenser within 60 minutes to at most 35, 41.5, 48.8 and 53.5 °C. During the tests the source water in the evaporator ranged from 2 to 20 °C.

The coefficient of performance rose with the source temperature, from 2.1 to 3.5, reaching 3.5 with a 20 °C source. The authors conclude that heat pumps are an efficient choice for heating systems in Karshi, since their coefficient of performance exceeds 2 at all the source temperatures tested.
