Highlights

  • Eleven sampling points: wells IOBK, Nazarbek and Zam-zam (Zangiota district); Tekstil (Tashkent); Yangiyul; Chatkal and Chimgan sanatoria, Ozodboshi and Minora (Bostanliq district); A. Yassaviy, Mersian sanatorium (Yuqori Chirchiq district); and Kirkkiz spring.
  • Readings 2006–2023, mostly 2013–2023; two to ten dates per point.
  • Isotopes shown: δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C of groundwater, with earthquakes marked by date, energy class (LogR) and distance.

Summary

The authors, of the Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, plot δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C in groundwater from wells in the seismic zones of the Pretashkent artesian basin over 2013–2023, with earlier readings at three wells (2006 and 2012), and mark the earthquakes of that period on each graph. The wells include the Nazarbek well and the Zam-zam sanatorium in Zangiota district, the Chatkal and Chimgan sanatoria and Ozodboshi in Bostanliq district, the A. Yassaviy well of the Mersian sanatorium in Yuqori Chirchiq district, and wells in Tashkent and Yangiyul.

Comparing the isotope data with the geology and hydrogeology of the area, they conclude that aquifers with active water exchange fed by infiltration water have negative δ¹⁸O values, aquifers with very slow exchange dominated by sedimentation water have positive values, and mixed waters lie in between. They attribute the variety of changes to differences in the mechanism of the earthquakes and in the seismic activity of the fault zones.

The graphs give the values in “об.%” (per cent by volume), and the paper names no method, laboratory or reference standard. The abstract mentions deuterium and tritium, but no hydrogen isotope data are shown.
