Summary

Written for oil and gas exploration, this three-page note sets out hydrogeological criteria for forecasting oil and gas in the Andakli area in the south-west of the Bukhara–Khiva region, an area of deep troughs and local uplifts. Hydrogeologically it belongs to the deep artesian basins of the Amu Darya syneclise. The main aquifer complexes are in Jurassic and Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate rocks, separated by regional aquitards.

The formation water is under high pressure and highly mineralised, mostly of chloride–calcium and chloride–sodium type, and its salinity rises with depth. In the productive horizons groundwater moves slowly and is only weakly connected with modern infiltration water; in some horizons the coefficient of abnormal formation pressure reaches 1.3–1.6. Iodine, bromine and other trace elements are treated as indirect signs of hydrocarbons.

The authors conclude that the most informative criteria are the salinity and chemistry of the formation water, its trace elements, gas saturation and the hydrodynamic regime, and that hydrodynamically closed zones are the most promising for gas and gas condensate. The note gives no temperatures, well depths or numbers of samples.
