Highlights

  • Gross geothermal potential: 67,000 million tonnes of oil equivalent, more than solar; technical potential only 0.3 million.
  • Eight large hydrothermal resource pools; gross potential of geothermal water 244,200 tonnes of coal equivalent.
  • Largest geothermal water potential: Bukhara region (81,200 tce) and Namangan region in the Fergana Valley (42,600 tce).
  • Average temperature of geothermal water 45.5 °C, highest in Bukhara (56 °C) and Syrdarya (50 °C) regions.
  • Rock at 4,000–6,000 m is at 70–300 °C across the country.

Summary

The IEA’s overview of Uzbekistan’s energy sector. Its chapter on sustainable development has a section on geothermal energy, which describes the resource, where it is largest, and how little of it is used.

It says geothermal resources are found in almost all regions, the best opportunities are in the Fergana Valley, and thermal water use is still at an early stage, with no geothermal generating capacity yet.
