Uzbekgeofizika has begun preparing the feasibility study for a pilot project on using the geothermal energy of groundwater in deep wells, a new line of work for the company, it reported on 17 October 2025.

On 15 October, the company held an on-site discussion at its Fergana Geophysical Expedition branch on the opportunities in this field, which has high potential in Uzbekistan, and the work ahead. Taking part were the Uzbekistan Recovery and Development Fund, the National Energy Efficiency Agency, Hungary’s Geomax, Teploenergoproyekt, O‘zbekgidrogeologiya, the Institute of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology and the Kokand city administration.

The participants exchanged views on the work to be done in the near term and in the longer term.

Why it matters

In September the company had named well No. 1 in Kokand as the first site for this work. Starting from a deep well rather than drilling a new one avoids much of the cost of a geothermal project. The same expedition hosted BRGM and University of Geological Sciences geologists in September 2026 to study the wider Fergana Valley.
