On 5 March 2024, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) held a seminar in Tashkent titled “Using shallow geothermal energy for heating and cooling buildings”, the Ministry of Energy reported the same day.
Shallow geothermal energy is the heat in the upper 100–200 metres of the earth’s crust, at an almost constant temperature all year, the ministry said, calling it a “green” alternative to natural gas.
According to UzA, speakers said the environmental and economic aspects, the regulatory basis, existing and potential projects, and the conditions for implementing geothermal solutions in Uzbekistan were important issues, and international experience was presented. Further plans for using geothermal energy for heating and cooling were set at the end of the seminar.
