Uzenergoinspeksiya, the inspectorate that oversees the use of electricity, oil products and gas, has studied the technical possibility of extracting geothermal heat from a 2,800-metre well in Kokand, it reported on 11 August 2025. The study found a temperature of 92 °C at the bottom of the well, which was drilled in 1964.

With a pipe diameter of 14 cm, it concluded that about 2.0 MW of geothermal energy could be used by lowering a coaxial pipe into the well. Officials of organisations near the well were briefed on the importance of a project to build a geothermal heat station in Kokand.

Talks were also held with specialists of Hungary’s Geomax, who said similar projects had been carried out in Hungary and that they could take part in the planned Kokand project. A similar project was first tested in Khorezm region, the inspectorate said.

Why it matters

In September 2025, Uzbekgeofizika announced a new line of work on geothermal water and named well No. 1 in Kokand as its first priority. In October 2025 it began preparing a feasibility study for a geothermal pilot using deep wells, and Geomax and the Kokand city administration took part in an on-site discussion.
