The International Finance Corporation (IFC), with state and private partners, is exploring the use of shallow geothermal energy for heating and cooling buildings in Uzbekistan, its Regional Manager for Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, Neil McKain, told The Times of Central Asia in an interview published on 3 June 2024.

The IFC is mapping licensing and permit processes and the local production and distribution of heat pumps, he said. It is also studying regulatory and incentive policies to promote surface geothermal solutions and to carry out surface geothermal projects in the country.

Using this energy source can help reduce reliance on gas and electricity, McKain said. He repeated the points to Trend later in June.
